Tips & Substitutions

For an extra depth of flavor, consider adding a splash of white wine to the tomato mixture while cooking. If you want a lighter version, you can substitute the fryers with skinless chicken breasts. If you don’t have fresh herbs, dried herbs can work well; just reduce the amount accordingly. This dish can be prepared ahead of time and tastes even better after the flavors meld overnight in the refrigerator.

Serving Suggestions

Serve this hearty casserole with wild rice or brown rice for a complete meal. A side salad with a tangy vinaigrette can help balance the richness of the dish. For an extra touch, sprinkle some fresh parsley on top before serving. This dish also pairs beautifully with Classic Creamed Corn Au Gratin for a comforting dinner.

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftovers in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place the casserole in a preheated oven at 350°F until heated through, about 25-30 minutes. If frozen, thaw in the refrigerator overnight before reheating. This dish can also be frozen for up to 2 months.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use other types of chicken for this recipe?

Yes, you can use boneless, skinless chicken thighs or breasts, but adjust the cooking time as they may cook faster. If using larger pieces, ensure they reach an internal temperature of 165°F for safe consumption.

What can I substitute for tomatoes if I don't like them?

If tomatoes aren't your favorite, consider using tomato sauce or crushed tomatoes as a substitute. You can also add a bit of tomato paste for concentrated flavor. For a completely different take, try using a cream-based sauce with vegetables.

How can I make this dish vegetarian?

To make a vegetarian version, replace the chicken with hearty vegetables like mushrooms, zucchini, or eggplant. Use vegetable broth instead of chicken broth and consider adding beans for protein. This will give you a satisfying dish while keeping it within vegetarian recipes.
