Ingredients

  • 1 1/4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup plus 1/2 cup firmly packed brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup (1 stick) butter or margarine
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 2 Golden Delicious apples
  • 1 cup caramel candies
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts or pecans

Instructions

  1. Heat oven to 350°F (175°C).
  2. Lightly grease a 9-inch square baking pan.
  3. In a medium bowl, combine 1 cup all-purpose flour and 1/4 cup brown sugar.
  4. Cut in 1/2 cup butter until mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  5. Transfer mixture to the prepared pan and press evenly into the bottom.
  6. Bake for 10 minutes.
  7. Meanwhile, in a bowl, toss chopped apples with beaten eggs, vanilla extract, and chopped walnuts or pecans.
  8. Spread the apple mixture over the baked crust.
  9. Place caramel candies on top of the apple layer and bake until caramel is melted and bubbly, about 10-15 minutes.
  10. Allow to cool slightly before cutting into squares and serving.
