Ingredients

  • 3 lb. stew meat (1-inch cubes)
  • 1 stick oleo/butter
  • 1 small bunch celery (2 cups)
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 green pepper
  • 1 small bunch carrots
  • 5 medium potatoes
  • 1 package onion soup mix
  • salt and pepper to taste

Instructions

  1. Brown the stew meat in oleo over medium heat.
  2. Cover the browned meat with water and cook for 45 minutes.
  3. Add chopped celery, green pepper, carrots, and chopped onion to the pot.
  4. Cover with water and cook for 1 hour.
  5. Add potatoes, cover, and cook for another hour.
  6. Test for seasoning, adjusting salt and pepper as needed.
  7. Add onion soup mix and cook for 20 minutes.
  8. Add monosodium glutamate (m.s.g.) and more water if necessary.
  9. Never cook fast; maintain a slow simmer.
  10. Total cooking time should be about 4 hours on low heat.
