  • 2 oz. pistachios, shelled
  • whipping cream, vanilla ice cream or lemon sorbet (to serve)

Tips & Substitutions

For a richer flavor, consider adding a splash of vanilla extract or almond extract to the compote while simmering. If fresh cherries are unavailable, frozen cherries can be used as a substitute, but adjust the cooking time accordingly. To enhance the texture, feel free to mix in some chopped walnuts or pecans along with the pistachios before serving.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the cherry compote warm or chilled over a scoop of vanilla ice cream, whipping cream, or lemon sorbet for a delightful dessert. It also pairs beautifully with Chocolate Custard Bread Pudding for a decadent treat. For a brunch option, consider serving it alongside pancakes or waffles for a fruity topping.

Storage & Reheating

Store the cooled cherry compote in an airtight container in the freezer for up to three months. To enjoy, simply thaw in the refrigerator overnight or gently reheat on the stove over low heat until warmed through. Avoid boiling to retain the delicate texture of the cherries.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use other fruits for this compote?

Absolutely! This recipe can be adapted to include other fruits like blueberries, raspberries, or even mixed berries. Just adjust the sweetness and cooking time based on the fruit's ripeness and juiciness to achieve the desired consistency.

How can I make this recipe less sweet?

To reduce the sweetness, you can decrease the amount of honey or substitute it with a natural sweetener like maple syrup or agave nectar. Additionally, adding a bit of lemon juice can balance the flavors without increasing sweetness.

Is it possible to make this compote without added sugar?

Yes, you can omit the honey entirely and rely on the natural sweetness of the cherries and orange juice. If the compote is too tart, consider adding a small amount of stevia or another sugar substitute to taste.
