Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup shortening
  • 4 cups confectioners sugar
  • 1 teaspoon almond extract
  • 4 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup walnuts
  • 1 cup maraschino cherries

Instructions

  1. Sift or mix together the flour, baking powder, and salt.
  2. Cream the shortening and confectioners sugar.
  3. Blend in the almond extract and eggs, adding eggs one at a time.
  4. Alternate adding milk and dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, beginning and ending with dry ingredients.
  5. Fold in chopped walnuts and finely cut maraschino cherries.
  6. Pour the batter into a well-greased and floured 10-inch tube pan.
  7. Gently cut through the batter to break air bubbles.
  8. Bake at 350°F for 60 to 65 minutes.
  9. Remove from oven and while still warm, spread with butter and sprinkle with a cinnamon-sugar mixture.
