Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 lb. lean hamburger
  • 1 (28 oz.) can crushed tomatoes
  • 1 (14 1/2 oz.) can stewed tomatoes
  • 3 (15 oz.) cans dark red kidney beans
  • 1 (16 oz.) bottle hot salsa
  • 1 (10 oz.) can diced tomatoes with green chiles
  • 3 stalks celery
  • 1 medium onion
  • 1 green pepper
  • 2 tsp. sugar
  • 1 tsp. cayenne pepper
  • 6 tsp. chili powder

Instructions

  1. Brown the lean hamburger in a skillet; drain excess fat.
  2. Saute garlic and diced vegetables (celery, onion, green pepper) in olive oil until tender.
  3. Combine the drained hamburger with crushed tomatoes, stewed tomatoes, kidney beans, diced tomatoes with green chiles, and hot salsa in a large pot.
  4. Add spices including sugar, cayenne pepper, chili powder, salt, and pepper to taste.
  5. Stir in the sauteed vegetables and their olive oil; do not drain the vegetables.
  6. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer uncovered for 1 to 2 hours, stirring occasionally.
  7. Serve hot with Italian bread.
