Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 tablespoons baking cocoa
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped walnuts

Instructions

  1. Mix together sugar, shortening, eggs, applesauce, and vanilla.
  2. Stir in the remaining ingredients: flour, baking cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, salt, and chopped walnuts.
  3. Spread the batter into a greased and floured 9 x 9-inch pan.
  4. Bake for about 35 minutes in a 350°F oven.
  5. Bake until the top springs back when touched.
  6. Cut into bars while still warm.
