Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1 1/3 cups sugar
  • 1/3 cup cocoa
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup applesauce
  • 1/3 cup water
  • 1/3 cup margarine or shortening
  • 1/3 cup semi-sweet chocolate pieces
  • 1/3 cup nuts

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, salt, and baking powder.
  2. Stir together until well mixed.
  3. Beat the mixture for 30 seconds on low speed, then for 3 minutes on high speed.
  4. Stir in the semi-sweet chocolate pieces and nuts.
  5. Pour batter into greased and floured 9 x 5 x 3-inch loaf pan or two 7 x 3 1/4 x 2 1/4-inch pans.
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 1 hour.
  7. Serve warm and enjoy.
