Ingredients

  • 2 pkg. active dry yeast
  • 1/2 c. warm water
  • 2 c. milk
  • 1/3 c. honey
  • 1 Tbsp. salt
  • 1/3 c. shortening
  • 5 to 5 1/2 c. all-purpose flour
  • 2 c. uncooked oats
  • 1/3 c. firmly packed brown sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Dissolve yeast in warm water and set aside.
  2. Pour hot milk over honey, salt, and shortening in a large bowl and cool to lukewarm.
  3. Stir in 1 cup of flour to the mixture.
  4. Add softened yeast and oats to the bowl.
  5. Stir in enough additional flour to make a soft dough.
  6. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic.
  7. Let the dough rise until doubled in size, about 1 to 1 1/2 hours.
  8. Roll out the dough into a rectangle and sprinkle with brown sugar and cinnamon.
  9. Roll up the dough tightly and slice into loaves.
  10. Place in greased pans, let rise again until doubled, about 30 minutes.
  11. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30-35 minutes or until golden brown.
  12. Cool slightly before removing from pans and serving.
