Ingredients

  • 3 medium apples
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 tablespoons shortening
  • 2 cups raisins
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 cups water
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 tablespoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons baking soda
  • 2 tablespoons nutmeg
  • 1 tablespoon ground cloves
  • 1 cup chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Combine apples, brown sugar, shortening, raisins, sugar, and water in a saucepan.
  2. Bring to a boil and cook for 5 minutes.
  3. Remove from heat and cool.
  4. Sift together flour, cinnamon, salt, baking soda, nutmeg, and ground cloves.
  5. Stir in chopped nuts.
  6. Add the cooled apple mixture to the dry ingredients, stirring only to blend.
  7. Pour the batter into a greased and floured tube pan or two loaf pans.
  8. Bake at 350°F for 1 hour or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
