Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 1/2 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2/3 cup milk
  • 1/3 cup presweetened instant cocoa powder

Instructions

  1. Cream together the shortening, sugar, and eggs until light and fluffy.
  2. Sift together the all-purpose flour, salt, and baking powder.
  3. Add to the creamed mixture alternately with the milk, beating well after each addition.
  4. Spoon one-third of the batter into a well-greased 6 1/2-cup ring mold or a 9 x 9 x 2-inch pan.
  5. Mix the presweetened cocoa powder and broken walnuts.
  6. Sprinkle half of the cocoa-walnut mixture over the batter in the pan.
  7. Repeat the layers, ending with the remaining batter.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35 minutes.
  9. Let stand for 5 minutes after baking.
  10. Turn out of the mold carefully.
