  1. In a mixing bowl, combine all dry ingredients: flour, sugar, cocoa, soda, and salt.
  2. Sift the dry ingredients into an ungreased 13 x 9 x 2-inch loaf pan.
  3. With the back of a mixing spoon, make three holes in the dry ingredients.
  4. Pour melted shortening into the first hole, vinegar into the second, and vanilla into the third.
  5. Pour cold water over the top of the mixture.
  6. Mix and blend thoroughly until the batter is smooth.
  7. Bake for 50 to 60 minutes at 350°F (175°C).
  8. Watch carefully; the cake will appear wet on top but should not be overbaked.
  9. Allow the cake to cool before frosting as desired.
