Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups butter or margarine
  • 3 1/3 cups sifted all-purpose flour
  • 2 packages active dry yeast
  • 1/2 cup warm water
  • 3/4 cup plus 1 tablespoon milk
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 egg
  • 1 egg yolk

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter with 1/3 cup of flour until smooth.
  2. Chill the butter mixture.
  3. Roll out the chilled butter between two sheets of wax paper into an oblong 12 x 6 inches.
  4. Chill the rolled-out butter until ready to use.
  5. Combine the remaining ingredients: all-purpose flour, active dry yeast, warm water, milk, sugar, salt, beaten egg, and egg yolk to prepare the dough.
  6. Knead the dough until smooth and elastic.
  7. Roll out the dough into a large rectangle and place the prepared butter on top.
  8. Fold the dough over the butter, seal the edges, and roll out again.
  9. Repeat the folding and rolling process multiple times to create flaky layers.
  10. Cut the dough into triangles, roll into croissant shapes, and place on a baking sheet.
  11. Let the shaped croissants rise until doubled in size.
  12. Brush the croissants with beaten egg before baking.
  13. Bake in a preheated oven at 375°F (190°C) for about 15 minutes or until golden brown.
