Ingredients

  • 1 cup plain flour
  • 1 cup whole wheat flour
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts
  • 3/4 cup chopped dates
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 2 tablespoons melted shortening

Instructions

  1. Sift together the plain flour, whole wheat flour, soda, and salt.
  2. Add chopped nuts and chopped dates to the sifted mixture.
  3. Combine the beaten egg, buttermilk, and melted shortening in a separate bowl.
  4. Stir the liquid mixture into the dry ingredients until just combined.
  5. Turn the batter into three greased Number 2 size cans.
  6. Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
  7. Turn the tins on their sides during the last 15 minutes of baking.
  8. To remove from tins, cut out the bottoms of the cans.
