- Sift together the plain flour, whole wheat flour, soda, and salt.
- Add chopped nuts and chopped dates to the sifted mixture.
- Combine the beaten egg, buttermilk, and melted shortening in a separate bowl.
- Stir the liquid mixture into the dry ingredients until just combined.
- Turn the batter into three greased Number 2 size cans.
- Bake at 375°F (190°C) for 45 minutes to 1 hour.
- Turn the tins on their sides during the last 15 minutes of baking.
- To remove from tins, cut out the bottoms of the cans.
