Ingredients

  • 1 large cabbage, shredded
  • 1 or 2 white onions, sliced thin
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon celery seed
  • 1 cup vinegar
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons prepared mustard
  • 3/4 cup oil

Instructions

  1. Layer cabbage and onions in a large casserole dish, ending with a layer of cabbage.
  2. Sprinkle sugar and celery seed over the cabbage layers.
  3. Bring vinegar, salt, and prepared mustard to a boil in a saucepan.
  4. Add oil and bring the mixture to a boil again.
  5. Pour the hot dressing over the layered cabbage and onions.
  6. Do not mix; cover and refrigerate for at least 4 hours.
  7. For best flavor, refrigerate overnight.
  8. Serve chilled; keeps for several weeks.
