Ingredients

  • 3 cups flour
  • 2 cups brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup Crisco
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Combine flour, brown sugar, and Crisco to make the crumb mixture.
  2. Set aside 1 cup of the crumb mixture for topping.
  3. Mix soda into the buttermilk.
  4. Add the buttermilk mixture to the crumb mixture and stir.
  5. Stir in the egg, salt, and vanilla until well combined.
  6. Pour the batter into a large oblong baking dish.
  7. Sprinkle the reserved 1 cup of crumb mixture on top of the batter.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
