Ingredients

  • 1 cup chopped dates
  • 1 1/2 cups boiling water
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 3/4 teaspoon baking soda
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Mix together chopped dates, boiling water, and baking soda; set aside to cool.
  2. Cream together butter and sugar in a separate bowl.
  3. Add two well-beaten eggs to the creamed mixture and mix well.
  4. Add the cooled date mixture.
  5. Sift together flour, salt, baking soda, and baking powder; add to the mixture.
  6. Pour the batter into a greased and floured 9 x 13-inch pan.
  7. Sprinkle the top with chocolate chips, chopped nuts, and sugar.
  8. Bake for 30 minutes at 350°F (175°C).
