Ingredients

  • 1/2 lb. dates, cut up
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 2 Tbsp. flour
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 3/4 cup shortening
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs, beaten
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 tsp. soda dissolved in 2 Tbsp. hot water
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts
  • 1 3/4 cup flour
  • 1 (14 oz.) pkg. candy orange slices

Instructions

  1. Boil dates, sugar, flour, and water until thick, then let cool.
  2. Spread half of the batter in a greased 9 x 13-inch pan or smaller.
  3. Cover with sliced candy orange slices, which have been sliced lengthwise into 3 pieces each.
  4. Spread the remaining date mixture over the orange slices.
  5. Spread the remaining batter over the top.
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 40 minutes.
  7. Sprinkle with powdered sugar.
  8. Cut into small bars.
