- Pour hot water over chopped dates and soda. Dissolve and let cool.
- Mix the sugar, butter, flour, egg, and nuts together.
- Add the cooled date mixture to the dry ingredients and combine thoroughly.
- Pour the batter into a 9 x 9-inch pan.
- Bake in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted comes out clean.
- Crumble the baked cake in a dish and alternate layers with vanilla pudding.
- Serve topped with whipped cream. Optional: add miniature marshmallows and bananas.
