- Preheat oven to 450°F.
- Place a skillet on the stove eye with oil; let the skillet get hot.
- Mix self-rising cornmeal, flour, buttermilk, and water in a bowl.
- Add the well-beaten egg and mix well.
- Pour the batter into the hot skillet.
- Leave the skillet on the stove eye for about one minute.
- Place the hot skillet on the bottom rack in the oven and bake for 5 minutes.
- Move the skillet to the top rack and turn on the broiler until the cornbread is golden brown.
