- Melt butter in a heavy skillet over medium heat.
- Add the chicken pieces and cook until browned on both sides.
- Transfer the chicken to a heavy pot.
- Wash all vegetables thoroughly.
- Peel the carrots and slice into 2-inch pieces.
- Peel the onions.
- Peel and quarter the turnips and potatoes.
- Place all the vegetables on top of the chicken in the pot.
- Add chopped parsley, dried marjoram, bay leaf, salt, and ground black pepper.
- Pour enough cold water to cover all ingredients.
- Bring to a boil, then reduce heat, cover, and simmer for 1.5 hours.
- Serve hot with some chicken, vegetables, and broth in a bowl.
