Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 1/4 teaspoons salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons ginger
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1/2 cup molasses
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Melt the shortening and set aside to cool.
  2. Beat the eggs and set aside.
  3. Sift all dry ingredients together in a bowl.
  4. Mix the brown sugar, cooled shortening, beaten eggs, and molasses until well combined.
  5. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture and stir until incorporated.
  6. Pour in the buttermilk and mix well.
  7. Pour the batter into an 8 x 8 inch baking dish.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 25 minutes.
