Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1/4 cup molasses
  • 1 egg
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 3 cups flour
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 1/3 cup water

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C).
  2. Beat sugar, shortening, molasses, and egg until smooth.
  3. Mix together spices, salt, baking soda, flour, and raisins.
  4. Add the dry ingredients and raisins to the sugar mixture, along with water, to make a soft dough.
  5. Drop spoonfuls of dough onto ungreased baking sheets.
  6. Bake for approximately 10 minutes or until edges are golden.
  7. Cool on wire racks before serving.
