Ingredients

  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 cup white sugar
  • 1/2 cup shortening or margarine
  • 1 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Mix together brown sugar, white sugar, shortening, nutmeg, and cinnamon. Reserve 3/4 cup of this mixture for topping.
  2. Mix together flour, salt, and soda.
  3. Add the flour mixture to the sugar mixture and beat until combined.
  4. Add buttermilk and egg; beat until well mixed.
  5. Pour the batter into a 9 x 13-inch pan.
  6. Sprinkle the reserved 3/4 cup of sugar mixture on top.
  7. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 to 35 minutes.
