Ingredients

  • 12 slices bread
  • 1/2 lb. grated Cheddar cheese
  • 6 eggs
  • 2 2/3 cups milk
  • 1/4 cup butter
  • optional: ham

Instructions

  1. Make the dish 24 hours in advance to allow the bread to soak up the custard.
  2. Arrange the 12 slices of air-dried bread in a baking dish.
  3. In a bowl, whisk together the 6 eggs and 2 2/3 cups of milk.
  4. Pour the egg mixture evenly over the bread slices, ensuring they are soaked.
  5. Sprinkle the grated 1/2 lb. Cheddar cheese over the top.
  6. Add optional precooked ingredients such as ham, sausage, onion, pepper, or bacon as desired.
  7. Dot the dish with 1/4 cup of butter on top.
  8. Cover and refrigerate for at least 24 hours.
  9. Bake until the custard is set and the cheese is golden, approximately 30-40 minutes.
