Ingredients

  • 6 cups flour
  • 7 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup margarine
  • 2 tablespoons caraway seed
  • 2 cups raisins
  • 2 eggs
  • 3.5 to 4 cups milk

Instructions

  1. Sift together the flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.
  2. Cut in margarine with a pastry blender until crumbly.
  3. Stir in caraway seed and raisins.
  4. Add eggs and 3 1/2 to 4 cups of milk, stirring until well moistened. The mixture will be quite thin.
  5. Pour the batter into two greased 9 x 5-inch loaf tins.
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 1 1/4 hours.
  7. Turn out loaves onto a cooling rack.
  8. Butter the tops and sprinkle with sugar while warm.
  9. Serve warm. Freezes well.
