  • 3 Tbsp honey
  • 1 Tbsp canola oil
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1 c flaxseed meal
  • 1 1/4 c whole-wheat flour

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, dissolve the yeast in 2 tablespoons of warm water and set aside until bubbly, about 5 minutes.
  2. Mix in honey, canola oil, salt, and the remaining water.
  3. Add flaxseed meal, whole-wheat flour, and 1 cup of bread flour; mix well.
  4. Stir in enough of the remaining bread flour to make a soft and kneadable dough.

  6. Coat a 9 x 5-inch loaf pan with nonstick spray.
  7. Shape the dough into a loaf and place in the prepared pan.
  8. Cover and let rise in a warm place until doubled in size, about 1 hour.

  10. Bake the bread for 40 to 50 minutes or until browned on top and sounds hollow when tapped.
  11. Cool before slicing.

Tips & Substitutions

For a lighter texture, consider mixing in a bit of vital wheat gluten. If you prefer a sweeter bread, increase the honey to 1/4 cup. You can substitute the canola oil with olive oil for a richer flavor. Make sure to activate the yeast properly; if it doesn't bubble, it may be inactive. Using whole-wheat flour will give your bread a hearty texture.

Serving Suggestions

This flaxseed bread is delicious on its own, but it pairs beautifully with Sliced Cucumbers And Onions for a refreshing snack. Serve it alongside soups or salads, or use it for hearty sandwiches. For an extra treat, spread with nut butter or fresh jam. It’s also a great base for open-faced sandwiches topped with your favorite ingredients.

Storage & Reheating

Cool the bread completely before slicing and storing it. To keep it fresh, wrap it tightly in plastic wrap or aluminum foil, and store it at room temperature for up to three days. For longer storage, slice the bread and freeze it in a zip-top bag. Reheat slices in a toaster or oven for a freshly baked taste.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use ground flaxseeds instead of flaxseed meal?

Yes, ground flaxseeds can be used in place of flaxseed meal. However, flaxseed meal is typically finer and may lead to a smoother texture in the bread. You can grind whole flaxseeds in a coffee grinder if needed. Just ensure that the flax is fresh for the best flavor and health benefits.

Is this recipe vegan-friendly?

Yes, this flaxseed bread can be easily made vegan by using maple syrup or agave nectar instead of honey. Additionally, you can substitute canola oil with any vegetable oil of your choice. This makes it a perfect option for those following vegan recipes while still enjoying delicious homemade bread.

How can I tell when the bread is done baking?

To check if the bread is done, tap the top of the loaf gently; it should sound hollow. You can also use an instant-read thermometer, aiming for an internal temperature of about 190°F (88°C). If it’s not done, return it to the oven and check every few minutes until it reaches the desired doneness.
