Ingredients

  • 2 cups sifted flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 cup molasses
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 2 teaspoons ground ginger
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1/2 cup packed brown sugar
  • 1 cup boiling water

Instructions

  1. Sift the flour, soda, salt, cinnamon, ginger, and cloves together three times.
  2. Work the butter with a spoon until creamy.
  3. Gradually add the brown sugar, beating after each addition until light and fluffy.
  4. Add the well-beaten eggs and mix well.
  5. Add one-quarter of the flour mixture and blend.
  6. Add the molasses and beat until smooth.
  7. Add the remaining flour mixture and beat well.
  8. Stir in the boiling water until blended.
  9. Pour the batter into a greased 10 x 13-inch pan.
  10. Bake in a moderate 350°F oven for 45 minutes.
  11. Allow to cool before icing with buttercream frosting if desired.
