- In a 13 x 9-inch baking dish, beat eggs and milk with a fork until blended.
- Slice the French bread diagonally into twelve 3/4-inch thick slices, reserving remaining bread for another day.
- Soak bread slices in the beaten egg mixture, turning to coat both sides until all the mixture is absorbed.
- Heat 2 tablespoons of salad oil in a 12-inch skillet over medium-high heat.
- Cook bread slices until browned on both sides, turning once.
- Remove French toast to a warm platter and keep warm.
- Repeat with remaining bread slices, adding more salad oil if necessary.
- Sprinkle with confectioners sugar.
- Serve with bacon and maple syrup if desired.
