Ingredients

  • 16 slices day old bread
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 4 eggs
  • 3 cups milk
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons vanilla
  • 1 can apple pie filling
  • 2 cups chopped nuts
  • 1 cup raisins
  • 3/4 cup butter
  • whipped cream (optional)

Instructions

  1. Tear bread into 1-inch pieces.
  2. In a large bowl, combine bread and sugar, and set aside.
  3. In another bowl, beat eggs, milk, cinnamon, salt, and vanilla.
  4. Pour the egg mixture over the bread and sugar.
  5. Mix well, cover, and refrigerate for 2 hours.
  6. Stir in the apple pie filling (cut slices in half), chopped nuts, raisins, and melted butter.
  7. Pour the mixture into a 9 x 13-inch baking pan.
  8. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 45 to 50 minutes until firm.
  9. Cut into squares and serve warm or cold, topped with whipped cream if desired.
