- Mix melted margarine, 1/2 cup sugar, and vanilla together.
- Sift flour, 3 tablespoons cocoa, baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt together.
- Add the sifted dry ingredients alternately with milk to the margarine mixture, mixing well.
- Stir in chopped nuts if desired.
- Combine 1/2 cup sugar, 5 tablespoons cocoa, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and boiling water to make the sauce.
- Pour the batter into a greased 10 x 6 x 2-inch baking dish or pan.
- Drop tablespoonfuls of the sauce on top of the batter.
- Bake in a moderate oven at 350°F (175°C) for 40 to 45 minutes.
- Serve warm, spooning out portions of cake covered with sauce.
