Ingredients

  • 2 Tbsp. melted margarine
  • 1 c. sugar
  • 1 tsp. vanilla
  • 1 c. sifted flour
  • 8 Tbsp. cocoa
  • 1 tsp. baking powder
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 c. milk
  • 1/2 c. chopped nuts
  • 1 2/3 c. boiling water

Instructions

  1. Mix melted margarine, 1/2 cup sugar, and vanilla together.
  2. Sift flour, 3 tablespoons cocoa, baking powder, and 1/2 teaspoon salt together.
  3. Add the sifted dry ingredients alternately with milk to the margarine mixture, mixing well.
  4. Stir in chopped nuts if desired.
  5. Combine 1/2 cup sugar, 5 tablespoons cocoa, 1/4 teaspoon salt, and boiling water to make the sauce.
  6. Pour the batter into a greased 10 x 6 x 2-inch baking dish or pan.
  7. Drop tablespoonfuls of the sauce on top of the batter.
  8. Bake in a moderate oven at 350°F (175°C) for 40 to 45 minutes.
  9. Serve warm, spooning out portions of cake covered with sauce.
  10. For serving cold, top with whipped cream or milk if desired.
