Ingredients

  • 3 oz. unsweetened chocolate
  • 3/4 cup boiling water
  • 1/2 cup ready to eat bran
  • 1 1/2 cups sifted cake flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 3/4 teaspoon soda
  • 3/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 cup shortening
  • 1 1/2 cups sugar
  • 1/3 cup thick sour milk or buttermilk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Place the unsweetened chocolate in a mixing bowl.
  2. Add boiling water and stir until the chocolate melts.
  3. Add the ready-to-eat bran and set aside to cool.
  4. Sift the cake flour, baking powder, soda, salt, and sugar into the cooled mixture.
  5. Add the shortening and beat for 2 minutes (about 200 strokes).
  6. Add the thick sour milk or buttermilk, vanilla, and eggs.
  7. Beat for 2 minutes.
  8. Pour the batter into two greased 8-inch pans.
  9. Bake at 350°F for about 30 minutes.
  10. Ice with Fudge Frosting.
