Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 cup milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 tablespoons melted shortening
  • 3/4 cup brown sugar

Instructions

  1. Mix flour, salt, 1 1/2 tablespoons cocoa, and baking powder.
  2. Add milk and vanilla to the dry ingredients and stir until well combined.
  3. In a separate bowl, mix 3/4 cup brown sugar and 3 tablespoons cocoa; sprinkle this mixture over the top of the batter.
  4. Pour 1 3/4 cups hot water evenly over the entire mixture.
  5. Bake at 350° to 400° Fahrenheit for 40 minutes, adjusting based on your oven.
  6. The dish will form a moist cake on top with a rich chocolate sauce underneath.
