Ingredients

  • 1 cup flour
  • 3/4 cup sugar
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1/4 cup shortening
  • 1 ounce unsweetened chocolate, melted
  • 1 1/4 cups hot water
  • 1/2 cup salted pecan halves
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar, firmly packed
  • 2 tablespoons cocoa
  • 1/2 cup dairy sour cream
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 350°F.
  2. Grease the bottom and sides of a 1 1/2-quart casserole dish.
  3. In the casserole, combine the flour, sugar, soda, and salt.
  4. Add vanilla extract, sour cream, shortening, melted unsweetened chocolate, egg, and 1/4 cup hot water.
  5. Blend all ingredients thoroughly.
  6. Beat vigorously with a wooden spoon for 1 1/2 minutes.
  7. Sprinkle pecan halves over the batter.
  8. Cover with brown sugar and cocoa mixture.
  9. Pour 1 cup hot water over the sugar mixture.
  10. Bake at 350°F for 50 to 55 minutes until the cake springs back when lightly touched.
  11. Loosen edges with a spatula and invert onto a plate immediately.
