- Line the bottom of a 9-inch spring-form pan with tinfoil.
- Butter the foil and sides of the pan.
- Set aside.
- Combine 3/4 cup of melted butter, sugar, and vanilla in a large mixer bowl; beat well.
- Add egg yolks, one at a time, beating after each addition.
- Blend in 1/2 cup cocoa, all-purpose flour, vegetable oil, and water; beat well.
- Stir in chopped pecans.
- Beat egg whites, cream of tartar, and salt in a small mixer bowl until stiff peaks form.
- Carefully fold the egg whites into the chocolate mixture.
- Pour the batter into the prepared pan.
- Bake at 350°F for 45 minutes.
- Cool for 1 hour.
- Cover and chill until the cake is firm.
- Remove the sides of the spring-form pan.
