Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 12 tablespoons melted shortening
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 cup boiling water
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • flour (add until firm dough)

Instructions

  1. Put the baking soda into the boiling water and stir to dissolve.
  2. In a mixing bowl, combine the sugar, egg, melted shortening, ginger, molasses, and the hot water with dissolved baking soda.
  3. Gradually add flour to the mixture until the dough is firm enough to handle.
  4. Drop spoonfuls of the dough onto a cookie sheet.
  5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 10 minutes or until golden brown.
