Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 cups flour
  • 1/2 cup Crisco
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 egg
  • 5 tablespoons Brer Rabbit molasses
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 cup buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Combine the flour, sugar, cinnamon, and ginger in a mixing bowl.
  2. Add the Crisco and cut in until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  3. In a separate bowl, beat the egg and molasses together.
  4. Stir in the buttermilk and egg mixture into the dry ingredients until just combined.
  5. Pour the batter into a greased and floured 8-inch square pan.
  6. Sprinkle the crumb mixture on top of the batter.
  7. Bake in a 350°F oven for 45 minutes or until a toothpick inserted in the center comes out clean.
