Ingredients

  • 1 cup dark molasses
  • 1/2 cup brown sugar
  • 1/2 cup canola oil
  • 1/2 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 2 1/2 cups unsifted flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1 cup boiling water

Instructions

  1. Blend molasses, brown sugar, canola oil, cinnamon, cloves, nutmeg, and ginger until well combined.
  2. Stir in boiling water gradually into the mixture.
  3. Mix in the unsifted flour until smooth.
  4. Dissolve the baking soda in 2 teaspoons hot water and add to the batter.
  5. Pour the batter into a greased 8 x 8 x 2-inch cake pan.
  6. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 30 minutes.
