Ingredients

  • 6 to 7 golden Delicious apples
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 2 tablespoons flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/4 teaspoon ginger
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon mace (optional)
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla
  • 2 tablespoons butter or margarine
  • cream or milk
  • pastry for 2 crust pie

Instructions

  1. Peel, core, and thinly slice the apples to measure about 7 cups.
  2. In a bowl, combine sugar, flour, cinnamon, ginger, salt, and mace (if using).
  3. Add vanilla and sliced apples to the bowl and toss to coat evenly.
  4. Preheat the oven to 375°F (190°C).
  5. Line a pie dish with one crust and fill it with the apple mixture.
  6. Dot the filling with small pieces of butter or margarine.
  7. Cover with the second crust, seal the edges, and cut small slits on top to vent.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for about 45 minutes or until the crust is golden brown.
  9. Serve warm with cream or milk if desired.
