Ingredients

  • 1 cup sugar
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup sour milk
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 4 cups flour
  • 3/4 teaspoon nutmeg
  • 1/4 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon soft butter
  • 1/2 teaspoon cream of tartar
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla

Instructions

  1. Cream sugar with shortening.
  2. Add eggs, unbeaten.
  3. Add vanilla.
  4. Sift dry ingredients and alternate adding them with sour milk (to which baking soda has been added) to the creamed mixture.
  5. Roll the dough on a floured board.
  6. Cut into doughnut shapes.
  7. Fry in hot, deep fat until golden brown.
