Ingredients

  • 1 cup butter
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 jars (16.5 oz each) applesauce
  • Whipped cream
  • 1 cup sugar
  • 3 eggs
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 1 cup milk
  • Nuts

Instructions

  1. Cream together the butter and sugar until light. Stir in molasses.
  2. Add eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.
  3. Add the milk to the creamed mixture, beating after each addition.
  4. In a separate bowl, stir together flour, soda, and salt.
  5. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the creamed mixture, beating after each addition.
  6. Grease and flour three round cake pans.
  7. Pour 1 1/3 cups of batter into each pan.
  8. Bake at 375°F until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean, about 25-30 minutes.
  9. Remove from oven and cool on a rack.
  10. Repeat baking with remaining batter if necessary.
  11. Spread applesauce between each layer and on top of the assembled cake.
  12. Refrigerate before serving.
