Ingredients

  • 1 pkg. dry yeast
  • 5 c. all-purpose flour
  • 5 tsp. baking powder
  • 1 c. shortening
  • 1/4 c. warm water
  • 3 Tbsp. sugar
  • 1/2 tsp. soda
  • 1 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 2 c. buttermilk

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast in warm water and set aside.
  2. Sift the dry ingredients, including flour, baking powder, soda, salt, and sugar, into a large bowl.
  3. Cut in the shortening until the mixture resembles coarse crumbs.
  4. Add the buttermilk, then pour in the yeast mixture.
  5. Stir until the mixture is thoroughly moistened.
  6. Turn the dough out onto a floured board and knead for a minute or two.
  7. Roll out the dough to about 1/4-inch thickness and cut with a biscuit cutter.
  8. Place the biscuits on a greased baking sheet and let rise for 30 minutes.
  9. Bake at 425°F (220°C) for 15 minutes or until golden brown.
  10. Brush the tops with melted butter before serving.
