Ingredients

  • 1 lb. ground beef
  • 1 lb. Italian sausage
  • 1 large onion
  • 1 c. sliced mushrooms
  • 1 Tbsp. minced garlic
  • 4 (15 oz.) cans tomato sauce
  • 15 oz. can tomato puree
  • 12 oz. can tomato paste
  • 1 1/2 c. water
  • 1 tsp. pepper
  • 1 tsp. dried basil
  • 1/2 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. dried oregano
  • 1/2 tsp. dried thyme
  • 1 bay leaf

Instructions

  1. Remove casings from the Italian sausage.
  2. In a large skillet, brown and crumble the ground beef and sausage until cooked through.
  3. Remove the meat from the skillet with a slotted spoon and transfer to a large stock pot or two large saucepans.
  4. Add chopped onion and sliced mushrooms to the skillet and cook until slightly limp.
  5. Remove the onions and mushrooms with a slotted spoon and add them to the meat in the pot.
  6. Add tomato sauce, tomato puree, tomato paste, water, pepper, dried basil, salt, dried oregano, dried thyme, and bay leaf to the pot.
  7. Stir to combine all ingredients thoroughly.
  8. Bring the mixture to a boil, then reduce heat to a simmer.
  9. Simmer uncovered on low heat for 3 hours, stirring occasionally.
  10. Serve hot or freeze for later use.
