Ingredients

  • 4 lb. country ribs
  • 1/4 tsp. garlic
  • 1/2 c. onion
  • 1 Tbsp. oil
  • 3 Tbsp. Worcestershire sauce
  • grated rind of lemon
  • 1/2 c. lemon juice
  • 2 Tbsp. brown sugar
  • 3/4 tsp. salt
  • 1/2 tsp. ginger (optional)
  • 1 c. chili sauce
  • 1 c. syrup from can of pineapple

Instructions

  1. Sprinkle the ribs with garlic.
  2. Preheat the oven to 450°F (232°C).
  3. Place the ribs in a roasting pan and bake for 20 minutes.
  4. While the ribs are baking, prepare the sauce by combining onion, oil, Worcestershire sauce, grated lemon rind, lemon juice, brown sugar, salt, ginger (if using), chili sauce, and pineapple syrup in a saucepan.
  5. Bring the sauce to a boil, then reduce heat and simmer for a few minutes to blend flavors.
  6. Remove ribs from the oven and brush generously with the sauce.
  7. Serve ribs hot, garnished with extra lemon if desired.

Tips & Substitutions

For an extra depth of flavor, consider marinating the ribs overnight in the sauce before baking. If you don't have Worcestershire sauce, soy sauce can be a good substitute, though it will change the flavor profile slightly. You can also add crushed red pepper for a spicy kick, or use a different fruit syrup if pineapple isn't available.

Serving Suggestions

These Hawaiian ribs are delicious served with steamed rice or a side of Bavarian Cole Slaw for a refreshing crunch. Grilled corn on the cob or a fresh fruit salad can also complement the sweetness of the dish. Don't forget to garnish with extra lemon for a zesty finish!

Storage & Reheating

Store any leftover ribs in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, place them in a preheated oven at 350°F (175°C) for about 15-20 minutes, or until heated through. You can also microwave them, but be sure to cover them to retain moisture.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I use a different type of ribs for this recipe?

Yes, you can use baby back ribs or spare ribs instead of country ribs. Just adjust the cooking time accordingly, as different cuts may require different cooking durations to become tender.

Is it necessary to use fresh lemon juice?

While fresh lemon juice provides the best flavor, you can use bottled lemon juice in a pinch. Just keep in mind that the taste may not be as bright and fresh as when using fresh lemons.

Can I make this recipe ahead of time?

Absolutely! You can make the sauce and bake the ribs a day ahead. Just reheat them in the oven before serving. This allows the flavors to meld beautifully, making the dish even more delicious.
