Ingredients

  • 3 cups self-rising flour
  • 1 teaspoon basil
  • 1 teaspoon thyme
  • 1 teaspoon oregano
  • 1 tablespoon shortening
  • 2 tablespoons softened butter
  • 3 tablespoons sugar

Instructions

  1. In a large bowl, combine self-rising flour, sugar, basil, thyme, and oregano.
  2. Mix well to distribute herbs evenly.
  3. Stir in beer to form a stiff batter.
  4. Grease a pan and sprinkle with cornmeal.
  5. Turn the batter into the prepared pan.
  6. Bake at 325°F (163°C) for about 65 minutes.
  7. Brush the hot bread with softened butter.
  8. Turn out onto a rack to cool.
