Ingredients

  • 1/2 cup butter
  • 1/2 cup sugar
  • 1 egg
  • 1 cup molasses
  • 2 1/2 cups flour
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon ground cloves
  • 1 teaspoon ginger
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • 1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
  • 1 cup hot water

Instructions

  1. Cream the butter and sugar together until well combined.
  2. Add the beaten egg and molasses to the creamed mixture and mix thoroughly.
  3. Sift together the flour, salt, ground cloves, ginger, cinnamon, and baking soda, then gradually add to the wet ingredients and mix well.
  4. Pour the batter into a greased and floured 9-inch pan.
  5. Bake at 350°F (175°C) for 35 to 40 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean.
