Homemade Dog Biscuits

Ingredients

  • 3 to 3 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups whole wheat flour
  • 1 cup rye flour
  • 1 cup cornmeal
  • 2 cups cracked wheat (bulgur or burghul)
  • 1/2 cup nonfat dry milk
  • 4 teaspoons salt
  • 1 package yeast
  • 2 cups chicken stock or other liquid
  • 1 egg

Instructions

  1. Combine all dry ingredients, except yeast, in a large mixing bowl.
  2. In a separate bowl, dissolve yeast in 1/4 cup warm water.
  3. Add chicken stock to the dissolved yeast and mix well.
  4. Pour the liquid mixture into the dry ingredients.
  5. Knead the mixture for about three minutes until well combined.
  6. If the dough is too stiff, add extra liquid or an egg to loosen it.
  7. Preheat the oven to 300°F (150°C).
  8. Roll the dough out on a floured surface to about 1/2-inch thickness.
  9. Use cookie cutters to cut the dough into bone shapes or other desired shapes.
  10. Place the cut-outs on an ungreased cookie sheet.
  11. Brush the biscuits with a mixture of beaten egg and milk.
  12. Bake in the preheated oven for 45 minutes.
  13. Turn off the oven and leave the biscuits inside overnight to harden into bones.
