Ingredients

  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3 tablespoons butter
  • 2 eggs
  • 2 egg yolks
  • 2 tablespoons molasses
  • 2 tablespoons white corn syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon lemon juice
  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon cloves

Instructions

  1. Cream sugar and butter together.
  2. Add eggs, egg yolks, molasses, white corn syrup, and lemon juice to the mixture.
  3. Sift together flour, baking powder, cinnamon, and cloves.
  4. Add the dry ingredients to the wet mixture by hand using a spoon.
  5. Add flour and walnuts by hand to form the dough.
  6. Cover the dough with aluminum foil and grease a jellyroll pan and a regular cookie sheet.
  7. Dump the dough onto the prepared sheet and use floured hands to pat it out to 1/2-inch thickness.
  8. Bake at 300°F (150°C) for 25 to 30 minutes.
  9. Perform a toothpick test to ensure doneness.
  10. Allow the baked sheet to cool for 3 to 4 minutes, then turn the dough out onto wax paper and cool for 5 to 6 minutes, then peel off the foil.
  11. Cut the cooled dough into 1 1/2 to 2-inch square bars.
