  • 2 qt. sour cream
  • 1 Tbsp. paprika
  • 3 lb. chicken
  • 1 tsp. salt
  • 1 tsp. pepper
  • 1 Tbsp. garlic or 4 cloves fresh garlic
  • 2 c. flour
  • 4 egg yolks
  • 1/4 c. milk
  • 3 qt. water

Instructions

  1. Saute onions, garlic, and chicken until onions are translucent and chicken is lightly browned.
  2. Bring water to a boil in a large pot.
  3. Add the onions, garlic, and chicken into the boiling water.
  4. Reduce heat and simmer for 2 hours.

Tips & Substitutions

For added depth of flavor, consider using smoked paprika instead of regular paprika. If you're short on time, you can use pre-cooked chicken to reduce cooking time. A splash of white wine during the simmering process can enhance the dish. If sour cream is unavailable, Greek yogurt can be a suitable substitute for a similar creaminess.

Serving Suggestions

Serve the chicken paprikosh over a bed of egg noodles, rice, or with crusty bread to soak up the rich sauce. A side of Mixed Vegetables(No Fat) complements this dish well, adding color and nutrition. For a complete meal, pair it with a light salad or roasted vegetables.

Storage & Reheating

Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. To reheat, gently warm on the stove over low heat, adding a splash of milk to restore the creamy texture. Alternatively, you can microwave it in short intervals, stirring in between to ensure even heating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I make this dish in advance?

Yes, Hungarian Chicken Paprikosh can be made a day ahead. The flavors meld beautifully overnight. Just reheat gently before serving, and add a bit of milk if the sauce thickens too much during storage.

What kind of chicken should I use?

Bone-in, skin-on chicken pieces work best for this recipe as they provide more flavor and moisture. However, you can use boneless, skinless chicken breasts for a leaner option, adjusting the cooking time accordingly.

Is it possible to make this dish vegetarian?

Absolutely! You can substitute the chicken with hearty vegetables like mushrooms, zucchini, and bell peppers. Use vegetable broth in place of water to maintain a rich flavor profile, and follow the same cooking instructions.
