Ingredients

  • 1 1/2 cups seedless raisins
  • 1 1/2 cups cut up dates
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 2 cups boiling water
  • 5 tablespoons shortening
  • 3 cups sifted Gold Medal flour
  • 1 teaspoon soda
  • 2 teaspoons cinnamon
  • 1 teaspoon cloves
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup chopped nuts

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 325°F.
  2. Simmer the raisins, dates, sugar, water, and shortening gently for 20 minutes.
  3. Allow the mixture to cool.
  4. Sift together the sifted flour, soda, cinnamon, cloves, and salt.
  5. Stir the dry ingredients into the cooled fruit mixture.
  6. Mix in the chopped nuts.
  7. Pour the batter into two well-greased and floured loaf pans (8 1/2 x 4 1/2 x 2 1/2 inches).
  8. Bake for 1 hour 30 minutes to 1 hour 45 minutes.
